IPTV – Internet Protocol Television powered by Signagelive
Further to yesterday’s post where we exained the simicity of showing Live Television on Samsung’s Xn series of products, we now exore taking that concept further by looking at IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) to enable the TV source to be broadcast over a LAN to multiple Signagelive devices.
As the same suggests, IPTV refers to television that is broadcast over a local IP network. There are of course solutions available that offer web based IPTV solutions that can be either broadcast (live) or streamed in the same way videos are embedded into web pages such as the BBC News and YouTube.
So what’s required? The source which can be a Freeview set-top-box, satellite receiver, video camera etc… needs to plug into an encoder which converts the source signal into an IP stream and broadcasts the resulting IP stream across the LAN. Example encoders approved with Signagelive can be found at Exterity (see White Paper) and Teracue.
Once you have your hardware in place you simply create your playlists and layouts within Signagelive and to schedule the IPTV stream, you just add the UDP address of the encoder to Signagelive as an asset.
With the launch of Signagelive desktop edition, many companies are adopting IPTV because:
– Television and video can be easily supied to all computers and digital displays on the network and when combined with Signagelive makes it perfect for corporate communication/lunch break entertainment for staff.
– As an IP based LAN is likely to be in ace, there are no additional infrastructure costs to worry about.
– Consistently high video quality regardless of the number of users viewing the stream which is a problem when using RF based solutions.
